The first meeting was held in a Bingo Hall in Sebring with about 106 charter members present.  Since  the first service held on January 7, 1990, Emmanuel grew steadily, and in two years purchased the Hope Street property.  The first church building was completed in 1992.

Although additional offices and meeting rooms were added in 1998, space was again outgrown.  Thanks to substantial gifts and a successful capital campaign, a new debt-free sanctuary was built in 2006.

Reverend Barbara M. Laucks was Emmanuel's pastor from the year 2000 until her retirement on June 30, 2008.    Her dedicated leadership steadily expanded our caring and compassionate ministries to the congregation and the community.

Emmanuel welcomes Reverend James (Jim) Langdoc as pastor during the interim period beginning July 1, 2008.

The recently completed sanctuary pictured above is of a unique and exceptionally sturdy steel construction that will truly be a church for the ages.

WHO WE ARE AS THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

We are members of the United Church of Christ by our membership in one of the more than 5,500 local congregations that belong to the United Church of Christ. Our members bring a rich variety of traditions, gifts, talents and strengths to their local congregations and to the wider church.

We feel a call to be a peace and justice church, and realize the challenge to be a growing church. We know our need to be nourished by Scripture and grow spiritually. Our hope is to include people of all family styles.

We govern ourselves democratically.  Local congregations are responsible for their own affairs, including how money is raised and spent, and how social issues are addressed. Congregations voluntarily join together for shared ministries in our communities, nation, and world. We are a united and uniting church, believing that cooperation and ecumenical work are the will of Christ when he prayed " ...that they may all be one." (John 17:21)

We are an expression of the Body of Christ in the world today. We have a strong, common center enriched by great diversity. This open spirit has been expressed by the phrase, "in essentials, unity; in non-essentials, diversity; in all things, charity."

Briefly, the United Church of Christ grew out of four historic Protestant denominations.

In 1931, the Congregational and Christian Churches joined to become the Congregational Christian Church; in 1934, the Swiss-German Reformed Church and the German Evangelical Churches became the Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1957, the Congregational Christian Church and Evangelical and Reformed Church merged to become the United Church of Christ

Adding to this diversity are also those who have joined us from other faith traditions, and from people the world over, including Black, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Native American, Hungarian, and Armenian.
